Lawnmowers and a Little Perspective

As I was cutting the grass this evening, my eight year old son, Luke, was watching me on the sidelines. I felt I had to get the grass cut quickly to move on to the “next thing”. Then I realized, do I? Why don’t I see if Luke wants to join and help. Sure, being around a lawnmower with a high speed cutting blade might not be the safest thing in the world, but sometimes you just have to take risks.

He doesn’t have the ability to talk, but as soon as I called him over, his face lit up and I knew we are were on to something good. What if, and I usually do, just go about my busy schedule and forget to look around and see what I may be missing by keeping my head down and just “getting it done”. In our small businesses, we will ALWAYS have so many things to get done and deadlines to meet. What if we took time each day to remember why we are doing what we are doing. A good lesson for me as well, is to take some time to get back to the root of why you started your business in the first place and then remember the little things are what really matters. Cutting the grass can be fun!

Clay – you are so right! Take time to smell the roses! Time goes by so fast. I am a true believer of work hard, play hard – even if the play time is mowing the lawn with your son! Good catch on a good time!
